Thank you, good sir, for a well-reasoned argument. I too am sick of the haters. They've had a detrimental side effect on more than just TOR. On the sites I read, the TORhaters were also rabid GW2 supporters, and even though I enjoyed the game in Beta, I refused to become part of a community whose primary supporters flung hate and vitriol at a decent if somewhat uninspired game.

I've had this game since launch, and I love it. Can't wait for Makeb. In all honesty, the hate is seriously stupid. I've played a lot of MMO's. Other than WoW this is the only other game that kept me around longer than 6 months.

Pretty much my thoughts. Disney never has a particularly bad track record with anything, and people just like to harp on the "Disney Channel" aspect as much as they can (Hannah Montana type of stuff) to enforce a stereotype. They are very respectful of most aspects of things that they work with and always throw plenty of money at something to ensure that it is well done. That's why things like Hao Miyazaki's movies and Kingdom Hearts have all-star voice casts. Disney cares less about making money, and more about drawing in more fans (even if that, in turn, gets them the money).

I'll make an addendum to this. Probably the biggest aspect of gameathons is networking with people. Social media can be great for this, but some (most) people truly don't care about you or your cause. The only reason we did as well as we did was because of MLG Streamers' core audience and streamers and the advertising they did for us during the event. The streamers were constantly making threads for us and bumping them. As such, we almost never dropped under 30 viewers and usually held fast around 50ish. The following is what we learned.

Reddit is practically useless. It works for the bigger gameathons because people actually know about them, but they probably would have done just fine without reddit.

4chan is your best friend. Though they hate when you advertise for an event (it's against the rules, actually), you're putting out something much more worthwhile than you would normally see on there. Advertise on /b/ and people will show up to watch. For what that's worth. Use discretion.

Facebook is immensely useful. If you can manage to get a hold of a bunch of followers on your own page, you can spread the word directly on their news feeds. Don't have that core audience? Get another related page (Megaman X, for example) to post something up for you. That's really all you can hope to do.

Twitter CAN be effective, but you have to know the right people or have a bunch of followers. We brought almost no viewers from Twitter.
